These very difficult economic times will be the backdrop for everything the City Council does over the next four years. Balancing the budget will be a challenge each year as revenues remain stagnant (at best), and the costs of providing city services increase incrementally. A good estimate of the deficit we face each year is $300,000. From the vote on Prop 1, it is very clear that citizens do not want a property tax levy lid lift as a way to balance our budget. It's tempting to opt for simple solutions – cut services to basic survival levels and hold off any initiatives to preserve or enhance our quality of life. I don't agree with that approach. Our current financial condition means we must work even harder to hold on to the best of what we have, and actively shape our future in positive directions. We all know this: the strict financial control, so necessary for LFP today, is nothing new. It has always been a hallmark of good local government. I believe I have the experience and skills from my service on the LFP Planning Commission, several task forces, and my professional work, to serve the City well during the tough years ahead. I would very much appreciate your support! Thanks, |
